10/14/08 - Pens 3, Flyers 2
October 15, 2008 – 3:58 am | by Bob BuskirkThe first game I was able to go to this season! Usually I make it to 4 or 5 games during the season, but never this early. I want to thank my friend Brian for inviting me to the game.
First Period
There was a great atmosphere inside the stadium with a “Go Home Flyers!” chant. The first 4 minutes of the game were pretty boring, both teams were feeling each other out.
Then the pens get their first chance with Satan in front, but surprisingly Niittymaki made the save.
The pens have a bad giveaway and Upshall hits the post!
Another few minutes go by and then right off the faceoff Goddard and Cote go at it, and damn it was a good fight! Goddard landed a huge punch at the end of the fight.
Crosby draws a penalty. Then during the entire commercial break Richards is mouthing off to Crosby. The pens really don’t get anything established on the power play then Crosby gets a slashing penality, 4 on 4 for about a minute.
After the 4 on 4 the Flyers are on the power play, they get a few shots then Talbot gets a short-handed breakaway, Niittymaki comes up big with the save.
More back and forth action then Malkin makes a great pass out to Eaton who puts it on net, Niittymaki comes up with it and then a scrum ensues. Fedotenko gets knocked down during the scrum then Richards puches him while he is down, there’s 2 minutes for you Mr. Richards. During the pens power play they don’t get anything going and even ice the puck while they are on the power play. You hear some boo’s…..very sad.
End of the first…
Intermission
Well we were sitting in the C16 box (where the tv’s are), after coming back to our seats I sat down and the seat just broke! The center part of the seat just snapped off, you know we need a new arena when the seats are breaking off. Because my seat broke the one beside it was not usable either so we complained to the user. They were able to move me and one more of us down to Igloo East 3 rows behind the Flyers bench, I was close enough to spill my beer on Stevens!
In other news cotton candy here man made it through the summer…
Second Period
Crosby almost breaks through the Flyers defense, but the puck rolls off his stick into the corner, he chases it down and makes a quick pass to Dupuis, but his stick breaks on the shot. While Dupuis goes to get a new stick Crosby gets the puck in the corner, Dupuis gets back in the play in time for Crosby to feed him the puck…1 timer…Niittymaki again. Goligoski takes a shot from the point, another save, rebound shot by Dupuis another save by Niittymaki! Pens moving the puck around, another 1 times from Crosby to Dupuis…Niittymaki is a wall!
Sykora gets a good shot off…no dice. Pens all ove the Flyers right now.
Flyers get a penalty. The pens power play is looking better, moving the puck around well and getting some shots on net. But still no dice on the power play.
Matt Cooke goes to the box for cross checking. Flyers come into the zone and Orpik gets a slashing penalty, 5 on 3 time for the Flyers. Pens kill penalty number 1, then a shot comes in and is saved by Fluery, pops out behind him and Scuds makes a great save!
Sykora makes a sick pass over to Malkin and he hits the post!
The Flyers take a high sticking penalty, pens on the power play. Ossi Vaananen takes a puck to the chin. I got a great pic of him when he came over to the bench.
Pens still on the power play, Malkin throws it towards the net it hits off the post and Niittymaki has it. On the next faceoff the puck comes up to Orpik he shoots through a Tlyer Kennedy screen, GOAL! 1-0 Pens!
Only a few minutes later Matt Cooke centers one to Zigomanis, he buries it, 2-0 Pens. That’s Zigomanis’s first goal as a Penguin!
With less than a minute to go in the second period Carter tries to makes a pass through the slot, it hits off Hal Gill and goes into the net. 2-1 Pens. Thats goal #2 for Hal this season! Less then 30 seconds later the Flyers win an offensive zone faceoff and Timonen shoots it towards the net, it hits off someone in front and goes in…tie game. End of the second.
Third Period
A Flyer goes off for hooking. Pens on the power play, then get a few shots but do not convert. The pens really need to work on their power play!
Sykora shoots one on net, rebound comes to Stall, but he shoots it just wide.
Kennedy comes around the net with a backhander, Fedotenko comes looking for a rebound but it isn’t there. Hartnell highsticks Talbot, then when Talbot is on the ground Hartnell hits him, typical Hartnell. Another penguins power play that does not convert.
The Flyers get a power play but do not convert.
The Flyers try to enter the zone, but are offsides. Right about when the whistle blows Gill lays out Richards, the crowd loves it. A few Flyers come over to say something to Gill, but nothing really comes of it.
Scuds gets a penalty for tripping, big kill for the pens. The pens kill off the penality with the help of Fluery.
End of the third.
Overtime
Mark Eaton gets crushed in the corner.
Richards shoots it towards the net and Carter runs into Fluery, Letang is dumped…play goes on.
Crosby comes down with Dupuis and Letang, passes to Letang but Niittymaki saves it. On the next rush up Dupuis is all by himself goes to the outside and takes a hard slap shot…GGOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALL!!! 3-2 Pens, game.
Game Thoughts
This was definitely a weird game. Besides the fight in the first there was really not that much action going on. It seemed like both teams were just going through the motions. One thing though our scoring did not come from Crosby or Malkin, which is odd. Zigomanis picked up his first goal tonight and was awesome on draws, defintiely looking like a good pickup. Fluery was good again tonight too saving 28 of 30 shots and the 2 goals were deflections. The pens power play still needs alot of work, hopefully it will improve in the next few games…

Good game to miss then. Forgot it was happening. Glad we won but seemed boring :/
